Beschreibung

Here are some interesting facts about hedgehogs. These spiny mammals are members of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the eulipotyphlan family Erinaceidae. They are found in parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. Their range is global, with around 17 different species distributed across five genera. Learn about the different species of hedgehogs, as well as where they live. These creatures use sleep as a protection mechanism against harsh climates. In colder climates, they hibernate and sleep through times of heat. In deserts, they also sleep through the day, which is known as aestivation. In temperate climates, hedgehogs are active, with regular sleep cycles. But when it comes to hunting, they are not as easy to kill as we may think. Female hedgehogs give birth in June. Although some females give birth in early fall, the babies do not survive the cold winter because they don't get enough time to develop enough muscle and fat to withstand the cold weather. During the month of August, hedgehoglets start exploring on their own. Some female hedgehogs give birth to their second litter in September. However, these second-born hogs are less likely to survive the winter. In October, hedgehogs start eating lots of food to prepare for their hibernation. The diet of hedgehogs is surprisingly diverse. Besides insects, they also eat snails, eggs, lizards, frogs, snakes, and small mice. Their quills point outwards to protect them from predators. The reason for the anointing ritual is unclear, but it is believed to serve as a camouflage and poison for the hedgehog against predators.
